Comcast Stock Surges As DIS Moves Closer to Acquiring Fox Assets

Disney-Fox deal would be a media and entertainment earthquake

The Murdoch family, which controls Fox, prefers a deal with Disney because it would rather be paid in Disney stock than Comcast stock. Still, there will be legions of comic book movie fans now who are excited at the prospect of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four existing under the same umbrella as the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, putting the prospects of huge crossovers on the horizon. This comes as a statement from the company itself, seemingly getting ahead of an announcement from Disney and Fox, who have had eyes for nobody but each other throughout the process. The negotiations are ongoing with the agreement being expected to close by end of next week. Or at least, that's what we thought would come along with a sale of Fox to Disney.

Rumors of the Disney/21st Century Fox deal's demise may have been exaggerated. The director spoke at a recent Q&A about the subject where he revealed why he thinks it would mean less movies.

While speaking at a "Logan" screening event alongside stars Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, Mangold said, "If they're actually changing their mandate, if what they're supposed to do alters, that would be sad to me because it just means less movies". There will be no action figures. "And when that's dead, it means you're making a grown-up movie", noted Mangold. There won't be a dude in a Deadpool costume hanging out at Disneyland and they're certainly won't be any Cable and Deadpool Happy Meal toys to promote the movie, which is a major component to Disney's business model.

WSJ's report offers a clearer look at exactly what Disney would potentially acquiring.

Again, though, the issue of who actually owns the rights and what exactly Marvel would get should Disney purchase Fox - which, they nearly certainly will at this stage - is extremely complicated and no one really seems to know what'll happen to the Fantastic Four once this deal goes through.
