The Turkish leader has been one of the most outspoken critics of U.S. President Donald Trump's decision on Wednesday to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital and to start immediately the process of moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

"We are deeply saddened and anxious about the loss of four lives and the injuries of hundreds of Palestinians".

Erdogan also blasted Israel and Trump in a speech on Saturday, calling it a "state of occupation" and saying the US President had "unleashed conflict".

Erdogan has been bitterly opposed to the decision of US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem and has called a summit of Islamic countries on December 13 in Istanbul.

Hundreds of people across the most populous Muslim country staged protests Friday against Trump administration's policy shift on the contested city.

Hamas, which controls Gaza, confirmed the two men killed in the pre-dawn strikes belonged to the group, which has urged Palestinians to keep up the confrontation with Israeli forces.

Rockets were fired from Gaza and Israeli warplanes carried out raids on the territory. It also raised questions about how Israel could so aggressively oppose global boycott campaigns against it while one of its most senior ministers called for one against its own citizens. Thirteen demonstrators were arrested and four officers were lightly injured by stones, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Israeli daily Maariv said the attacker was from the West Bank city of Nablus and held an Israeli work permit. In the West Bank there were dozens of injuries, but no deaths.

He said that many Arab nations were increasingly aligned with Israel to tackle Iran's regional threat.

"For those who want to say this is a bad idea, I'll tell you: Ask us five or 10 years from now if you still think it's a bad idea".

"The US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is invalid and constitutes a risky breach of global law and UN Security Council resolutions", reads the document, adopted as a result of an emergency ministerial meeting in the Egyptian capital Cairo.
