FBI Director Christopher Wray Defends His Agency On Capitol Hill

FBI director defends bureau's integrity as GOP lawmakers question him about probes

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who has been leading the charge to have the Mueller investigation shut down, told Fox News that Trump was "being persecuted by Hillary Clinton's fan club". So far the evidence points strongly in the latter direction.

Ever since Mueller was appointed, there has been an effort by the president and his allies to discredit the special counsel's investigation.

Goodlatte and other Republicans are pressing the Justice Department to appoint a second special counsel to investigate the FBI's handling of Clinton-related matters, including an investigation into her use of a private e-mail server when she was secretary of state.

Besides, Wray said Trump has not asked him to pledge his loyalty to him nor spoken to him about Mueller's investigation. Trump has made a similar accusation.

Wray provided his first public defense of the nation's premier law enforcement agency since a weekend of Twitter attacks by President Donald Trump, who called the Federal Bureau of Investigation a biased institution whose reputation is "in Tatters - worst in History!" and urged Wray to "clean house". Comey was sacked by Trump in May. In general, he told the committee, "we will hold our folks accountable, if that's appropriate".

The inspector general for the Justice Department is in the midst of an probe looking into Strzok's behavior, and whether any FBI investigators improperly allowed their political leanings to affect the Clinton investigation. The fact that Strzok was transferred suggests that his supervisors recognized that there was an appearance problem. He was present during the FBI's 2016 interview with Clinton at the end of the email investigation. That same agent, Republicans noted, also played a prominent role in the Clinton investigation. There also have been attempts by the president's allies to change the subject, such as the claim that the real scandal was improper "unmasking" of members of the Trump transition team whose communications with foreign governments were intercepted by US intelligence.

Already, Manafort and former national security adviser Michael Flynn, two of the most prominent members of Trump's campaign, have been charged as part of the Russian Federation investigation. The unmasking allegations have proved to be a non-scandal too.

Page had also worked on Mueller's team, but she left that post two weeks before Strzok's departure for what officials have said were unrelated reasons.

"The FBI I see", Wray added, "is tens of thousands of courageous men and women who are working as hard as they can to keep people that they will never know safe from harm".
