Ukraine: Police clash with protesters over Saakashvili

Ukraine bows to IMF pressure on anti-corruption agency

His overall support in Ukraine appears low - a weekend rally that called attracted only about 3,000 people.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said this during a joint meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Vilnius on Friday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports. "From the very beginning they refused to register my party, then stripped me of my citizenship, then lied". On Tuesday, police detained him at his home, but he escaped with help from crowds who had gathered to protest.

The politician's latest detention followed a failed attempt by police to recapture him in a raid on the camp on Wednesday, which led to violent clashes with protesters.

He has since continued leading protests outside parliament demanding Poroshenko's impeachment over his failure to fight high-level corruption.

Ukraine's parliament bowed yesterday to pressure from its Western lenders and delayed voting on legislation giving it the power to remove heads of the country's nascent anti-corruption agency.

Poroshenko named Saakashvili as governor of the Odessa region in 2015, but he stepped down the following year after falling out with the president.

On Friday, Poroshenko said the case against Saakashvili was legitimate and that he should cooperate with investigators.

General Prosecutor Yuriy Lutsenko, who says Saakashvili is suspected of assisting a criminal organisation, said the opposition leader had been detained by police and was in a temporary detention facility.

Saakashvili later said police had searched the wrong tent at the camp, continuing a surreal hide-and-seek game between him and Ukrainian law enforcement ever since he barged across the border from Poland three months ago.
