Instagram is Testing a Standalone Messaging App Just Like Facebook Messenger

Instagram tests standalone messaging app called Direct

But let's see what Instagram brings to this new direct messaging app as messaging on Instagram is a quite popular feature.

Of course, the idea of a standalone messaging app that keeps it simple yet engaging is nothing short of attractive to Instagram and Facebook.

Facebook bought Instagram five years ago and since then both apps have become similar in some respects such as both have a "my story" feature and now both their messaging features will be separate to the main app.

In an interview with The Verge, Instagram product manager Hemal Shah said that Instagram Direct could help the company "create the fastest and most creative space for private sharing when Direct is a camera-first, standalone app". It's now being tested in only six countries: Chile, Israel, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay. If you install Direct, the inbox disappears from the Instagram app and can only be accessed in the messaging app. The Verge has reported that a standalone Direct app is being tested on iOS as well as Android. If Instagram introduces Direct globally - it now has no timeline for doing so - the move could give parent company Facebook a third popular messaging tool alongside Messenger and WhatsApp. Direct also ships with four exclusive filters and is ultimately seeking to grow its user base even more by providing people with a more focused experience, albeit one that's still deeply integrated into Instagram.

There are a couple of additional things you can do, but the main app experience is just those three screens. Instead, you'll have to DM your friends through Direct. Direct will open up to a phone's camera in a similar way to how Snapchat now does. It's also the place where your Instagram conversations reside. Otherwise, I wouldn't expect a lot of users to use the app.

If you're interested in trying out Direct, it'll take some time.

Just when it seemed like Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) was slowly walking back from its unbundling strategy, the world's largest social network may be looking to unbundle a significant service. It's a money move, and thus it's one that the company should - and nearly certainly will - make.
