United States senator resigns amid sexual misconduct allegations

NEW YORK NY- MARCH 30 Comedian Al Franken performs at the Air America Radio Launch Party

"A number of women have come forward", Franken said, quickly summarizing the now nine allegations of sexual harassment.

In response to the claim, Franken said: "This allegation is categorically not true and the idea that I would claim this as my right as an entertainer is preposterous".

Franken repeatedly drew attention to his pro-woman political record in his resignation speech, saying he has been proud to use his power "to be a champion of women". Female senators led the chorus.

"No, we don't intend to do so", said Texas Democratic Party Deputy Executive Director Manny Garcia, when asked whether the party would return or donate the money raised with the help of Franken to charity. He has been a fierce opponent of the Trump administration. The first allegation surfaced on November 16.

"Enough is enough", fed-up New York Sen.

Kaine writes in a letter to the Senate Office of Compliance that he will publicly release any information he receives to promote greater awareness of the problem and develop solutions.

US Senator Al Franken said Thursday he will resign in the face of multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against him, becoming the second prominent Democrat to be forced out in a week over the snowballing harassment allegations convulsing the country. Settlements by senators, if any, have not been made public.

Shortly after Tweeden came forward, Franken issued an apology that said, "I respect women".

He said that Gillibrand "gave cover" to those accused of sexual misconduct when it was "convenient", noting claims by Juanita Broaddrick that the former president raped her.

Franken said that even on Thursday, the "worst" day of his political life, he was grateful for his time spent serving the people of Minnesota. Hours later another woman said Franken inappropriately squeezed "a handful of flesh" on her waist while posing for a photo with her in 2009.

Franken thanked fellow Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar and his family before concluding, "This has been a tough few weeks, but I am a very lucky man". Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez also tweeted that Franken should step down. Minnesota Democratic Reps. Tim Walz and Collin Peterson both called for Franken to resign, as did Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The first allegation against Franken - for which he has apologized - was made by sports broadcaster and former model Leeann Tweeden, who said he forcibly kissed her, and touched her without consent as she slept, during a 2006 tour entertaining United States troops deployed in Afghanistan.
