Rolls-Royce engine trouble forces Air New Zealand to ground flights

Some flights will be retimed or cancelled for checks on Air New Zealand's Dreamliners

The engine issues both happened on Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes flying out of Auckland bound for worldwide destinations.

Passengers had said the captain announced a minor technical problem with one of the engines.

Earlier this week, another Air New Zealand flight, this time bound for Japan, was forced to return to Auckland after experiencing engine issues.

The move is in response two recent incidents involving 787-9 flights and based on advice from the engine manufacturer, Air New Zealand said on Thursday.

"Air New Zealand will be focused on finding replacement aircraft capacity", the airline said.

The news comes after two Air New Zealand flights, heading to Tokyo and Buenos Aires respectively, were forced to return to Auckland after take off earlier this week, due to unspecified engineering issues.

Customers affected by these changes will be proactively contacted with new travel information. "Should the commission believe insufficient action is being taken at any time, then it has the ability to issue urgent recommendations while its inquiries continue".

Rolls-Royce did not have spare engines available while the maintenance work was being undertaken, Air New Zealand said in an announcement to the stock exchange.

Air New Zealand is not the first airline to report issues with Rolls-Royce's Trent 1000 engines.

Rolls-Royce says that it regrets the disruption caused to Air NZ, and the two parties are working together to restore full operations of the Trent 1000 engines as soon as possible.

"Rolls - which has more than 400 of the US$10m engines in service - has acknowledged the problems. This is the continuation of work which started previous year to upgrade Trent 1000 engines to the latest standard".
