Former US president Barack Obama was fourth among United Kingdom users with his message of equality that "no one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion", which has in total been retweeted more than 1.7 million times globally.

Obama also had three of the top 10 most-retweeted tweets of 2017, according to several media reports.

President Obama's August 12 response to the Charlottesville, Va. As of December, the tweet has passed the 3.6 million retweet mark.

The top retweet came from fast food lover Carter Wilkerson, who begged people to retweet him so that he could get a year's worth of free chicken nuggets from Wendy's.

But overall, the most retweeted and liked tweets reflected a tough year with notable Twitter users taking to the social network to share their grief, anguish and support with others, in some cases getting millions of replies from the service's 330 million monthly users in the process.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged as the "most tweeted about world leader" after U.S. President Donald Trump in 2017, microblogging site Twitter said on Tuesday.

"In what's been a tough 12 months for many, this year's Top 10 United Kingdom retweets really show the difference people can make on Twitter, no matter whether you have just a handful of followers or many millions".

President Donald Trump, whose tweets make global news on a daily basis, did not make the list.

Other posts that made the 2017 most retweeted list include one from Ariana Grande following the attack in Manchester, England.

Also on the top 10 list was the explicitly anti-Trump sentiment of the National Basketball Association star LeBron James after the controversy over whether the Golden State Warriors would attend an event at the White House.

It was also the second most-liked post on the social media platform.

Mr. Obama's tweet as President on January 2 - "It's been the honour of my life to serve you". Obama took three of the top 10 spots on the list. Obama photographer Pete Souza was fourth, followed by current White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
