John Oliver questions Dustin Hoffman over sexual misconduct allegations

Dustin Hoffman & John Oliver Get Heated Over Harassment Claims

Famed actor Dustin Hoffman and TV host John Oliver got into a heated debate Monday night in NY while discussing allegations of harassment against Hoffman.

In a tense exchange - which Hoffman was unprepared for - the pair sparred over Hoffman's response to allegations made by Anna Graham Hunter that Hoffman groped her during the filming of the 1985 film, Death of A Salesman.

"You take it, 'This is an assaulter, this is a female assaulter, he's admitted it, '" he said, adding he felt like he was "put on display" at the panel meant to be focused on something else. Revisiting the internship for the Hollywood Reporter more than 30 years later, Hunter recalled the time she asked Hoffman what he would want for breakfast, and he responded, "I'll have a hard-boiled egg ... and a soft-boiled clitoris".

Hoffman issued an apology last month, saying that he didn't mean to put anyone in an "uncomfortable situation". After she came forward, writer and producer Wendy Riss Gatsounis alleged Hoffman had propositioned her inappropriately during a pitch meeting in 1991.

Oliver expressed disappointment in Hoffman's original apology in which he claimed the behavior is not "reflective of who he is". Hoffman apologized to Hunter the same day her accusations were published. "I still don't know who this woman is". The exchange, however, marked a rarity in the post-Harvey Weinstein era, which has seen accused harassers generally offer short statements, if they replied at all, about the allegations made against them; very few have engaged in long public conversations about it, and nearly none have sounded as defiant as Hoffman did Monday night. "'It's not reflective of who I am.' It's that kind of response to this stuff that pisses me off because it is reflective of who you were if it happened and you've given no evidence to show that it didn't happen. It's not reflective of who I am". "'Why...didn't I say something?' No one stands up to powerful men".

At a few points, Oliver read directly from Hunter's account, including a diary excerpt in which she wrote, "Dustin is a pig, but I like him a lot".

"Oh Dustin", Oliver said disapprovingly, putting his head in his hand.

The actor also discussed a story that recently resurfaced regarding a screen test for The Graduate, in which he allegedly touched co-star Katharine Ross, describing reports of the incident as "skewed".

John also added that he believed everything the accuser said because "there's no point in [an accuser] lying" to which Dustin retorted, "Well, there's a point in her not bringing it up for 40 years".

"I'm glad [I wasn't there]", the host replied.

"I can't leave certain things unaddressed", Oliver later said. "The easy way is not to bring anything up".
