Arizona GOP congressman Trent Franks resigning seat

Arizona Rep. Trent Franks expected to announce resignation

Earlier on Thursday, Democratic Senator Al Franken of Minnesota said he would resign in a few weeks following allegations of sexual misconduct.

"If this turns out to be true, there won't be that many people who are surprised", the Arizona Republican said, according to the report. He's also a member of the conservative Republican Study Committee.

Asked for comment as he left the floor, Franks said, "I'll let the statement speak for itself".

Franks told Roll Call that he will be making an announcement later in the day, but did not elaborate.

On Tuesday, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., resigned effective immediately. Franks has harshly criticized some NFL players for not standing during the national anthem, calling them "arrogant and overpaid Lilliputians who dishonor America".

Franks is a Congressman for Arizona's District 8.

Franks represents a district encompassing suburbs north and west of Phoenix.

Franks has served in the House since 2003 and is known as a fierce opponent of legal abortion, recently sponsoring a bill banning abortions after 20-week gestation that passed the House.

Franks sits on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Armed Services Committee.
