YouTube to counter extremist content with 10000 staff

YouTube Will Add More Human Moderators To Stop Its Child Exploitation Problem

According to YouTube, machine learning has helped human moderators remove approximately five times more videos than they had removed previously.

Susan Wojcicki, the CEO at YouTube said in a blog post on late Monday that the company will be increasing the number of employees working as supervising the contents up to more than 10000 by next year.

Wojcicki said the company would take "aggressive action" by launching new comment moderation tools.

In November, confectionary maker Mondelez (NASDAQ:MDLZ), Lidl, Mars and other consumer goods producers joined the boycott after The Times newspaper found YouTube was showing clips of scantily clad children in conjunction with the ads major brands. But apparently, embarrassingly, this is obviously rubbish, because the company also somehow needs 10,000 human beings to sit in a factory and make accurate decisions about uploaded video content, because its AI can't, literally, tell the difference between an arse and an elbow fold.

Rounding out the changes, YouTube will increase how it protects advertisers and creators from inappropriate content by applying stricter criteria, conducting more manual curation, and significantly ramping up its team of ad reviewers to ensure ads only run where they should.

Since June, according to Wojcicki, YouTube's content moderation staff has manually reviewed almost two million videos for violent extremist content, and as a result, has removed a total of 150,000 videos. This was due to the fact that there were videos with children that were the target of sexually inappropriate comments. Equally, we want to give creators confidence that their revenue won't be hurt by the actions of bad actors.

"We will be talking to creators over the next few weeks to hone this new approach", YouTube CEO said.

Wojcicki says that YouTube is taking lessons learned from the first wave of the Adpocalypse - which was ultimately triggered by violent and extremist content - and applying them to tackle other forms of problematic content (as well as video comments), including those that pose child safety concerns and feature hate speech.

She said adding more people to identify inappropriate content will provide more data to supply and potentially improve its machine learning software.
