Mrs. Fields is celebrating its 40th anniversary on National Cookie Day by giving the first 400 fans at every location a free full-sized chocolate chip cookie.

"It was only right to announce our festive celebration on a day dedicated to our favorite treat", said Shawn McAteer, senior vice president and global head, DoubleTree by Hilton. On National Cookie Day 2017, Great American Cookies will be offering 1 free original chocolate chip cookie for each guest.

Nestle's nationwide chain of cafes is inspired by the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Mass., where a chef named Ruth Wakefield invented the chocolate chip cookie almost 80 years ago - apparently by happy accident. It's one of a plethora of "holidays" that exist primarily so businesses can promote themselves, but in this case, the Holiday Industrial Complex is serving up a bunch of free cookies, so maybe we shouldn't complain. The offer is only valid on December 4th and no purchase will be necessary.
