MSK Prasad reveals why Jasprit Bumrah was selected

Indian cricket team

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the India cricket team squad for the South Africa tour 2018 Test series as well as the T20I team for the three-match series against Sri Lanka this December.

Bumrah was included as the fifth pacer in the Test team but left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav, now in the squad for the Sri Lanka Tests, missed out.

Squad for three- match Test series against South Africa: Virat (Capt), Vijay, Rahul, Shikhar, Pujara, Rahane (vc), Rohit, Saha (wk), Ashwin, Jadeja, Parthiv, Hardik, Bhuvneshwar, Shami, Ishant, Umesh, Bumrah.

The four frontline pacers - Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma - were certainties like spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

Sri Lanka are probably sick of the sight of Virat Kohli, so confirmation the India captain will be rested for the upcoming Twenty20 matches will come as welcome news for the tourists.

The 23-year-old Bumrah, who has 52 and 40 wickets respectively from 28 ODIs and 3O T20Is, has not played any first-class cricket this season.

Bumrah was included as the fifth pacer in the squad as chinaman Kuldeep Yadav, now in the squad for the Sri Lanka Test missed out.

India, who are on the verge of equalling Australia's record of 9 Test series win in a row, will next visit South Africa for a three-match Test series where they will hope to break the record. It's a unanimous choice and he definitely adds variety.

"Otherwise, Kuldeep is definitely a top-class bowler and over a period of time we'll see him growing".

Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been left out of the squad and Prasad insisted that the decision had more to do with the conditions expected in South Africa.

The squad features three uncapped players in Washington Sundar, Deepak Hooda and Basil Thampi.
