Yemen's President Hadi: We support every party facing Iran-backed Houthis

Yemen's former President Ali Abdullah Saleh

He also accused the Houthis of "terrorizing" civilians.

"Disagreements (between the two sides) can be settled through negotiation, and invaders and enemies will get the most out of the sedition", he said, urging Saleh to abandon such "irresponsible" and "suspicious" moves.

Saleh says he's ready for a "new page" with the Saudi-led coalition he's been fighting with the Houthis since the gulf state joined the conflict in 2015.

The clashes between Mr Saleh's supporters and the Houthis underscore the complex situation in Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Middle East, where a proxy war between the Iran-aligned Houthis and the Saudi-backed Mr Hadi has caused one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in recent times.

Houthis and Saleh loyalists jointly overran Sanaa and much of the country in 2014, forcing the internationally recognized government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi to flee to Saudi Arabia.

"We will deal with them in a positive way and what happened to Yemen is enough", he added.

Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said Saturday he was willing to talk with Saudi leaders as his coalition with Iranian-backed rebels appeared to be crumbling.

"The decision by (Saleh's) General People's Congress to take the lead and their choice to side with their people will free Yemen of. militias loyal to Iran", the statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency said.

The Saudi-led coalition welcomed Mr Saleh's change of stance.

Residents of Sana'a described heavy fighting on the streets of Hadda, a southern residential district of the Yemeni capital where many of Saleh's relatives, including his nephew Tareq, live, early on Saturday, with sounds of explosions and gunfire heard all over the area.

In a televised address, Saleh called for new relations with the Saudi-led coalition, which he and the Houthis have been battling for nearly three years (since March 2015).

There was no immediate word on casualties.

He told Yemenis all across the country that if they support him, "to defend the nation, the republic and the revolution".

"Air defence intercepted a ballistic missile, fired by the Houthis towards Khamis Mushait", Arabiya said on its Twitter account, without giving details.

"I appeal to the leader Saleh to show more wisdom and maturity. not to heed incitement calls, and help restore security to the country through cooperation", al-Houthi further said.

In March 2015, warplanes from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and other allies began airstrikes on rebel positions in Yemen.
