How to see this year's only supermoon on Sunday

How to get the best view of this year's brightest supermoon as it lights up the night sky

When the moon is both full and closest to us, we get a big, bright supermoon.

The first supermoon of the year was visible on January 12, and the second was on November 3.

Get your eyes to the sky, America, because the supermoon is coming. However, the moon will still appear plenty big when it rises in the eastern sky Sunday evening.

Tides are enhanced when Earth is at perihelion (the closest point in its orbit to the sun) and the moon is at perigee, according to PG&E meteorologist John Lindsey.

Tom Kerss, an astronomer at Royal Observatory Greenwich, stated that Sunday would be the best day to view the Cold Moon.

The full supermoon won't technically hit the U.S. until Monday morning (12:45am PT, 3:45am ET), but most of the best moon photo ops happen around moonrise and moonset - that will be around 5pm ET on Saturday and 7:50am ET on Sunday.

A supermoon can only occur at perigee-syzygy, when the moon is full and at perigee simultaneously. The moon will be closest to the earth in the first hours of the next morning, although it will be a little less full. It just won't be a full moon.

Sunset will take place at 4:28 pm on December 3, hence the full moon and sun won't be visible at the same time in NY.

To take a picture of the supermoon with a smartphone, tap on the moon on the screen and hold your finger in place to lock the camera's focus.

The moon will be at its brightest above the borough at around 4:47pm.

When can I see the supermoon?

The moon should sit near the constellation Taurus, though it shouldn't be hard to spot. The best time to watch a supermoon is when it's low, near the horizon. During an occurrence, the full moon generally appears up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than an apogee full moon.
