YouTube goes after child-exploiting channels and videos

YouTube Apologizes For Autocomplete Suggestion 'How To Have S*x With Your Kids'

Youtube began in 2005 as a simple way for users to share their videos, but the service has since grown to include on-demand movie rentals, deals with music artists to market music videos, and content specifically created for the website by "professional youtubers".

In case if you don't know, the YouTube Go was partially released by Google earlier this year, that substantially reduces the bandwidth usage while playing videos and caters more user-friendly features.

Advertisers including HP and candy companies Cadbury and Mars suspended their YouTube campaigns after a Times of London report showed ads appearing next to the videos.

YouTube reiterated that it had recently toughened guidelines for kids programming and noted that in the past week it had disabled comments on "thousands of videos" that could be targeted by predators and shut down "hundreds of accounts" of users posting predatory comments.

But they appear to have allegedly drawn comments from people viewing the videos with sexual intent, creating a freakish situation where ad revenue is being pulled not because of the specific content of the videos, but because of who they were accidentally appealing to.

"There shouldn't be any ads running on this content and we are working urgently to fix this", a YouTube spokesman said on Friday, according to Reuters. Some of them were holding more than 10 million views on YouTube. In that time, the company has also "removed ads from almost 2 million videos and over 50,000 channels masquerading as family-friendly content", YouTube reportedly said in a statement. For the uninitiated, the first adpocalypse started when advertisers started pulling ads from the platform when they realised that their advertisements were paired with offensive content on YouTube. There simply aren't enough humans to monitor so much video, and many claim the protective algorithms in place often don't work.

The second problem is how the ads are disseminated.

Campaigners have warned that pedophiles were targeting the videos posted on YouTube. So if a company requested its ad play with family friendly content, for example, there's a good chance it could have ended up on one of these videos. The Jolt Journal even tested in several browsers and have been removed. The platform terminated the channel in mid-November after reports highlighting inappropriate content, which included videos of children in pain and some with children throwing up.
