U.S. gun background checks hit new record on Black Friday

What Was One Of The Hot Black Friday Buys This Year? Guns

Gun sellers did brisk business on the biggest shopping day of the year, providing a respite from a year-long slump under the Trump administration. There were 185,713 background check requests reviewed that day. The two previous records - last year's and that of 185,345 in 2015 - were also recorded on Black Friday.

The figures also represent a almost 10% rise in the requested background checks from Black Friday in 2016, when 185,713 applied.

Last Wednesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions directed the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to review the NICS so that guns do not fall into the wrong hands.

Current promotions on firearms include rebates and discounts on pistols and shotguns at Cabela's, as well as deals on guns at Walmart and other retailers.

Sessions cited the November 5 shooting at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, as proof that "relevant information may not be getting reported to the NICS". State officials have said it was the largest mass shooting in Texas' history.

The actual number of guns is poised to be even higher: gun checks, which are federally mandated for gun purchases, are run on a single buyer and not the individual guns purchased.

"People should not be able to make their own assault weapons and other guns when those individuals are unsafe and legally barred from buying guns", Robyn Thomas, executive director of the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, told USA Today.

Sessions said he was directing the Federal Bureau of Investigation and ATF to determine if the Defense Department and other government agencies were properly reporting information to the database.

The number of background checks for firearms purchases does not represent the number of firearms sold since more than one firearm can be bought during a single sale or someone can decide not to buy. That's because a buyer looking to purchase multiple firearms in a single purchase only has to submit to one background check.

In an effort to warn audiences about "AR-15 style rifles", USA Today created a short video that showed various ways the gun could be modified.
