NYPD investigates Massage Envy for alleged sex assaults

Massage Envy accused in over 180 sexual assaults: Report

Dozens of women have filed a complaint against Massage Envy saying they were victims of sexual assault at the hands of their therapists according to BuzzFeed.

Approximately 180 people have come forward accusing massage therapists of sexual assault at Massage Envy spas across the country.

"Most women never report sexual misconduct", he said.

According to an ABC News report, one woman is suing after she said she was assaulted in 2015 at a Massage Envy in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

The company declined to comment on specific points made by BuzzFeed, but Melanie Hansen, general counsel of Massage Envy Franchising, said the company has "stringent, rigorous policies" for hiring, screening and training massage therapists.

"The article references 180 reported incidents". They also revealed that Massage Envy spas sometimes offered a settlement before the suit was filed, leaving no public record and the ability for abusers to continue to assault other clients.

She says it happened while she was making minimum wage, working as a receptionist at a Massage Envy in Glendale, California, and getting a complimentary massage.

In a statement on Sunday, Massage Envy called the allegations "heartbreaking for us and for the franchisees that operate Massage Envy locations".

"I was really in a state of shock, disbelief, fear", Ingram said.

Ingram reported the incident less than an hour later to the location's manager, who refused to interrupt Deiter's session with another female client or connect her with the spa's owner.

"It's terrible to be assaulted when you're in a very vulnerable position, but I think that for some women it's even worse to go and report what happened to you and not have it taken seriously", said BuzzFeed reporter Katie Baker.

"It terrified me. I froze up", said Martellaro.

Even if a client calls to report a rape, Massage Envy is not required to contact law enforcement.

According to the report, the chain told Buzzfeed it would not be "appropriate to respond point-by-point" to questions "because of pending litigation" and the confidential documents involved. "I endured a long, humiliating, and painful trial, and the massage therapist was convicted of a felony sexual assault".
