Amazon's Sumerian Tool Can Be Used To Develop AR And VR Experiences

Amazon has introduced a service aimed at making it easier for developers to build virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and 3D apps.

Amazon said Sumerian is available in preview starting today, accessible via its AWS Management Console.

Amazon Sumerian, the post notes, "doesn't require you to have 3D graphics or programming experience to build rich, interactive VR and AR scenes", and "provides tools and resources that allows anyone to create and run augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and 3D applications easily". "VR and AR apps created in Amazon Sumerian will run in any browser that supports WebGL or WebVR graphics rendering, including Daydream, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and iOS mobile devices".

The editor allows users to import 3D objects into scenes and includes features such as scripting, animation, and integration with Amazon's cloud services. In any case, users of the toolkit can create animated characters that interact with the player or customer verbally.

Sumerian enables developers to combine 3D models together in scenes that will be used in virtual reality and augmented reality applications at launch.

Amazon announced a new service at the AWS re:Invent Midnight Madness event.

The move comes after Google launched Poly, a platform that lets you find, view, and download free AR and VR objects and scenes-everything from a rocket ship to a sandcastle, piano, and pirate.

Past year online retail giant Amazon launched its first foray into videogame development with its Lumberyard game engine, adding and improving support for virtual reality (VR) content creation in the following months.

A library of pre-built objects and templates and the ability to upload your own 3D assets. You can request access to the preview with your AWS account number, but be warned: access is invite-only. 3D objects (e.g. furniture, buildings, and natural objects) and characters can be place into into "scenes" (e.g. rooms, office environments, and landscapes).

"Customers across industries see the potential of VR and AR technologies for a wide range of uses, from educating and training employees to creating new customer experiences", said Marco Argenti, Vice President, Technology, AWS, in a statement.

However, customers are afraid of the up-front investment and specialized tools needed to craft useful VR or AR apps.
