All Chromebooks can now download Microsoft Office from Google Play Store

Microsoft Office Android apps now available on all Chromebooks

Over the a year ago, "Office apps would randomly show up on one device without being available on most others", Chrome Unboxed said. You see, support trickled out initially to a limited selection of devices meaning the experience from one Chromebook to the next isn't necessarily the same. For those who have avoided Chromebooks because Google Drive was the best or only option, this is a big addition.

As Chrome Unboxed correctly highlights, this won't mean new functionality for all.

A key piece of software that has been missing from Chromebooks is now available to everyone - Microsoft Office.

Of course, why it took so long for Microsoft to iron out the kinks remains a mystery.

Cloud Pro has contacted Microsoft for confirmation of the rollout but hadn't received a response at the time of publication.

Office for Chromebooks is now available, and reports suggest it is showing up on many, many Chromebooks already.

Good news for Chromebook owners: you can finally download select Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint and Word, from the Play Store for free - but there's a caveat for some. Now, their Chromebooks will be compatible with the occasional Office file they receive. On the other hand, the Office productivity suite was not available on Chrome OS, which was a deal-breaker for users who were dependent on it. Anything larger than 10.1-inches and the subscription fee kicks in.

It is a rule from Microsoft that devices with a screen size of more than 10.1 inches need a paid subscription to edit, create or print any document. Last year, Google announced that the Google Play Store and Android apps were coming to Chromebooks, making these devices a really interesting alternative to Windows laptops.
