Oxford Circus: Two men quizzed after Tube panic

Tubes are not stopping at Oxford Circus station on the London Underground because of the incident

16 people were injured as they fled the station.

Early Saturday, the British Transport Police (BTP) released images of two men they'd like to speak to in relation to an altercation that took place in the station before the scare.

Ch Supt Martin Fry said: "I would like to thank the public and the media for assisting us with this witness appeal".

"We also took one patient to a major trauma centre for leg injuries".

Sixteen people were treated for injuries following the incident. At this time, it is not clear what sparked the panic or 999 calls to the police reporting gunshots.

"Given the nature of the info received we responded as if the incident was terrorism, including the deployment of armed officers", police added. Armed and unarmed officers are on scene and dealing along with colleagues from British Transport Police'.

Christchurch man Jack Ensor, 27, who's been living in London for several years, said he was in Bonds, a pub two blocks from Oxford Circus, when people came "stampeding around the corner".

Shoppers were told to leave their shopping and flee the store.

Shoppers were barricaded inside stores on Oxford Street and armed police were deployed after the alarm was raised during the evening rush hour. Everybody turned round in sort of pandemonium and started trying to exit the Tube as quickly as possible.

'Someone said it was a shooting - and people were running away and into buildings. "I am glad nobody was hurt", she said. People were climbing on top of each other.

The police said they had found no evidence of previously reported gunshots, and that there were no casualties.

Paying tribute to the "swift response" of emergency services, mayor Sadiq Khan urged Londoners to "remain vigilant and don't panic". "This year global spend is expected to reach 54 million pounds, with domestic spend up to 100 million during the one-day sales bonanza", a spokesperson said.
