CBS blackout ends for 4 million Dish Network customers following Thanksgiving truce

US Sen. Ed Markey urges Dish, CBS to settle dispute that could black out of Sunday's Patriots game

The deal comes after nearly three days of no CBS programming on Dish, including the NFL game on Thanksgiving Day, though it will allow football fans to watch SEC college games Friday and Saturday and an NFL doubleheader on Sunday.

During the disagreement, CBS claimed that while Dish had complained about fees being requested by the company, it has paid "at least one cable network more than double our asking price, for far less than half the ratings".

Dish had offered to install an over-the-air antenna for most customers affected by the outage so they could continue to receive CBS.

Hundreds of thousands of Dish subscribers lost access to their local CBS affiliates Tuesday morning as the satellite provider and network engaged in unsuccessful negotiations about carriage rates.

Dish Network and CBS agreed to a new multi-year contract, ending a blackout that would have left millions of satellite-TV subscribers without the nation's most-watched network and its popular football programming.

Also temporarily dropped in the standoff were CBS Sports Network, Pop, and Smithsonian Channel.

TV networks like CBS can offset losses from traditional TV providers through partnerships with online and non-traditional partnerships. Details about the deal, including financial terms weren't disclosed.

That scenario recently played out between CBS and DISH.

The deal was reached late Thursday night, hours after the Chargers' game in Dallas on CBS was not carried to some 400,000 customers in Los Angeles and 4 million others across the country.

The settlement comes in time to spare the Missouri at Arkansas game on Friday, top-ranked Alabama at Auburn and next week's Niners-Bears matchup from being held hostage in the dispute, which pulled CBS-owned stations off Dish in Chicago and 16 other cities.

"We are pleased we have reached a deal with DISH, who recognizes the value that the number one Network brings to viewers in these markets", said Ray Hopkins, President, Television Networks Distribution, CBS Corporation. "Our customers are clear: they don't want to pay a CBS tax".
