MEA asks Pakistan to allow Kulbhushan to meet wife along with mother

Responding to Pakistan's offer of arranging a meeting between Kulbhushan Jadhav and his wife, India has asked to allow his mother to meet him too and has also demanded that an Indian diplomat be present in the meeting.

In our response, we have conveyed that the wife of Jadhav would like to travel with her mother-in-law for the meeting.

Kulbhushan Jadhav - the alleged Indian spy - has been awarded a death sentence by a Pakistan military court on espionage charges. The move came months after New Delhi requested Islamabad to allow Jadhav's mother to meet him on humanitarian grounds. In its response, New Delhi conveyed to Islamabad that Jadhav's mother would also like to travel with her daughter-in-law to Pakistan. The International Court of Justice had stayed the execution of the sentence.

Furthermore, the government of Pakistan has made a decision to arrange a meeting of Commander Kulbhushan Jadhav with his wife in Pakistan. India says Jadhav was a businessman in Iran from where he was kidnapped and paraded by Pakistan's shadowy ISI as an Indian "spy".

Further, the MEA has also said they should not be questioned or harassed, and also that a diplomat from the Indian High Commission in Pakistan should be permitted to accompany them throughout their stay, NDTV reported.

"There was a longstanding request from the mother of Kulbhushan Jadhav to visit Pakistan and meet her son". New Delhi has said that Islamabad had repeatedly rejected or not responded to requests for consular access to Jadhav. Pakistan's offer to allow Jadhav's wife meet him comes days before Pakistan is to file a memorandum in the ICJ over India's allegations.

He indicated that India will go ahead with the case against Pakistan.

Jadhav was apprehended by Pakistani law enforcement agencies on March 3, 2016 after he reportedly crossed over to the country illegally. The MEA spokesperson also used the opportunity to state that Pakistan was not off the hook. He added that there would be no let-up of India's campaign to free Jadhav - "we are determined to pursue all measures with full vigour so as to secure the final release of an innocent Indian".
