Defecting North Korean soldier shot five times as he runs towards South

North Korea Hwang Pyong-so and Kim Jong-un

South Korean troops crawled to his side, rescued him, and took him to a hospital in the nearby town of Suwon.

Closed-circuit television footage released Wednesday by the USA -run United Nations Command, which controls the southern part of the DMZ, showed the man making his escape.

North Korea has yet to comment on the defection of a North Korean soldier who is being treated for gunshot wounds in South Korea after being shot by comrades during his escape.

The video does not show the moment when the defector was hit but he is seen lying motionless in a pile of dead leaves next to a concrete wall in one of the later edited clips in the video. He said the hospital staff have told him what life is like in South Korea, but they have not asked about his experiences in North Korea.

The soldier drove up to the border within the Joint Security Area (JSA) and then sprinted to the other side when his vehicle got stuck in the soft ground.

Some 40 rounds were reportedly fired, and the defector was shot five to six times, South Korean officials said in a Reuters report.

The United Nations Command (UNC), which controls the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, released dramatic footage of a North Korean solider defecting to the South earlier this month.

One of the pursuing guards appears to briefly cross the dividing line between the two countries before turning around.

Surprisingly, North and South Korean soldiers did not exchange fire in the first shooting in the area in more than three decades. But his escape is a huge embarrassment for the North, which claims all defections are the result of rival Seoul kidnapping or enticing North Koreans.

North Korea's actions during the defector's escape at the Panmunjom border village violated the armistice agreement ending the Korean War because North Korean soldiers fired across and physically crossed the border in pursuit of the soldier, U.S. Col. Chad Carroll, a spokesman for the United Nations command, told reporters in a live TV briefing Wednesday.

US-South Korean forces have requested a meeting with North Korea to "prevent future such violations".

After undergoing two surgeries last week to fix internal organ damage and other injuries, the soldier has regained consciousness and is no longer relying on a breathing machine.

He says the soldier watched "Transformers", "CSI", and "Bruce Almighty", and enjoyed the song "Gee" by popular South Korean female band "Girls' Generation".

"We've turned on the TV for him since yesterday", doctor Lee Cook-jong told reporters.

An official from UNC said North Korea had been informed on November 22 that it had violated the 1953 armistice agreement, which marked the cessation of hostilities in the Korean War.
