Texas offers reward in border agent's death

US Border Patrol agent dies from injuries suffered while on patrol near Big Bend Sunday morning

Authorities were scouring West Texas on Monday for those behind an apparent attack that killed one US border agent and injured another.

The FBI in El Paso is leading the investigation, along with the Culberson County Sheriff's Department and Customs and Border Protection's Office of Professional Responsibility.

The president spoke at a Cabinet meeting Monday at the White House. He pledged that "we're going to straighten it out".

Without elaborating on what happened to the officers, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the incident "an attack" in a statement.

A Border Patrol agent died Sunday morning as a result of injuries he sustained while on patrol in the Big Bend sector, the United States Customs and Border Protection office said. "We are grateful for the courage and sacrifice of our border agents who have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe".

"Border Patrol Officer killed at Southern Border, another badly hurt".

Authorities are scrambling to find whoever killed a Border Patrol agent and hope a $20,000 reward will help lead them to the assailant.

On Sunday, Trumped tweeted, "We will seek out and bring to justice those responsible".

Art Del Cueto, the vice-president of the NBPC, said the agents "were out there responding to a sensor and one agent was murdered".

Martinez, 36, was an El Paso native and had joined the Border Patrol in 2013. Ted Cruz have characterized it as an attack that caused the weekend death of a border agent and injuring of a second.

Conservative news outlet Breitbart reported that Border Patrol Agent, and National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd stated, "What we know is that Border Patrol Agent Rogilio Martinez appears to have been ambushed by a group of illegal aliens whom he was tracking", Judd said. He also offered "respect" to the families of the two agents.

Border Patrol records show that the agency's Big Bend sector, which includes the area where Sunday's attack took place, accounted for about 1 percent of the more than 61,000 apprehensions its agents made along the Southwest border between October 2016 and May 2017.

The region's mountains, and the Rio Grande River, make it one of the more hard areas to cross the border illegally, CBS News reports.
