UCLA players apologize for shoplifting in China, thank Trump

USA China- US-Basketball-Spieler kehren zurück nach Haft in China

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump acknowledged the thanks given to him by the three UCLA basketball players who have been released from China after being caught shoplifting.

While in Hong Kong on a promotional trip this week, LaVar Ball did not answer questions regarding Trump interceding with his China counterpart Xi Jinping to get LiAngelo Ball and his UCLA basketball teammates Cody Riley and Jalen Hill released after they were detained on suspicion of shoplifting.

While on a diplomatic trip to Asia, Trump claims to have raised their case with President Xi Jinping of China, ultimately leading to their expedited release and return to the US on Tuesday.

UCLA basketball head coach Steve Alford said the three players arrested in China have been suspended indefinitely from the team. Don't tell me anything. "They were headed for 10 years in jail!" he tweeted last Wednesday morning.

However, it was an unlikely supporter that has allowed the UCLA freshmen to avoid their charges and finally return to the United States on Tuesday.

LiAngelo Ball said at that time that he "didn't exercise my best judgment", adding, "I've learned my lesson". Maybe the President got involved; maybe his involvement helped expedite the return of the dipshits to their home country. "Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out".

"As long as my boy's back here, I'm fine", Ball told ESPN. Like I told him, "They try to make a big deal out of nothing sometimes". "I've seen a lot worse things happen than a guy taking some glasses". Sources previously told ESPN that the situation was likely to be resolved in several weeks, but Trump was visiting China and claimed to have brought the matter up with Xi Jinping.

Ball in EPSN's report on Saturday also downplayed his son's theft, arguing that "one bad decision doesn't define him". Days later, the players were freed.
