Elephants Unmoved by Trump's Backtracking on Trophy Ban: "We Don't Forget"

Ellen DeGeneres: 'Donald Trump is encouraging Americans to kill elephants'

Ellen DeGeneres has accused Donald Trump of "encouraging Americans to kill elephants" after the president reversed a ban on trophy imports from two African countries.

Though the change has been delayed until further notice, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will allow hunters to bring so-called elephant trophies from Zambia and Zimbabwe into the U.S.

Animal rights advocates, environmentalists and, crucially, even some Republicans had urged Trump to reverse course. He says he will review the issue with Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke.

Just hours before, Trump's spokesperson Sarah Sanders had defended the US Fish and Wildlife Service's move to end the 2014 ban initiated under Trump's predecessor Barack Obama.

On Friday, the administration put its decision on hold.

Others reminded us that Trump's sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, are big-game hunters.

He says sport hunting of the endangered species is "shameful" and calls for a permanent ban.

African elephants' population shrank by 30% from 2007 to 2014, in large part because of poaching.

The agency said that well-regulated sport hunting as part of a management plan can provide local incentives for conservation and raise money for conservation efforts.

"In this moment of turmoil, I have zero confidence that the regime - which for years has promoted corruption at the highest levels - is properly managing and regulating conservation programs", Royce said. "Thank you!" Trump tweeted Friday night. "Furthermore, I am not convinced that elephant populations in the area warrant overconcentration measures".

As a result, the number of African elephants has shrunk from about five million a century ago to about 400,000 remaining.

However, Trump wrote on Twitter Friday evening that the decision had been placed on hold. "This is the kind of trade we don't need".
