Troutman, vice president of advancement and marketing for the Children's Home of Reading, said more children are entering foster care than are exiting the system.

Many judges say this is their favorite day of the year when they get to see the children and families come together. Twenty-five percent of the over 427,000 children in the foster care system are eligible for adoption, but every year, thousands of children remain in the system awaiting a forever home. The children live with their new families for at least six months before the adoption is finalized.

The Zuniga family is one of 30 families adopting through Buckner Children and Family Services this year. Thanks to a dedicated committee of volunteers who work to help make the ceremony possible, families leave the event as an official family.

"This is my very first adoption, I've had Prynce on my caseload for about a year", Chelsea Loughin said. Parents who have attended the event in the past say the day marks the end of a long, uncertain time and the beginning of a new, more permanent journey.

They are about to learn they will never be separated after the hardships they have been through.

Searching for families to foster is critical to the process, she said.

3 brothers find a South Plains forever family on National Adoption Day

Around 200 children in Snohomish County are legally separated from their biological parents and waiting to be adopted. "Or to be adopted by a family who's gonna make them their children forever".

Gentry, whose office has to deal face-to-face with many of those situations that send kids to foster care, addressed the crowd. Numerous children had previously been home to home while in the foster care system. "We're seeing a lot more children entering care, lately".

All of these families have adopted out of the foster care system. Meanwhile, more than two million additional lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people nationwide would consider serving as foster or adoptive parents, but face barriers due to these laws as well as policies and practices in other states that prevent them from doing so.

She was asked to take care of them and she obliged, and the rest is history.

There is also training, a homestudy, reference check, as well as an Federal Bureau of Investigation and criminal background check, but agencies can help guide people through the process. Trainings for foster parents are offered at the county level.
