Four die as United Kingdom light aircraft and helicopter collide mid-air

Waddesdon crash

A helicopter and another aircraft have been involved in a mid-air collision in Buckinghamshire.

"We're aware of a number of casualties following an incident this afternoon", Thames Valley Police said in a tweet.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene, including the Thames Valley air ambulance, two ambulance crews, two ambulance officers and a rapid response vehicle", said a spokeswoman.

Firefighters now assisting other emergency services at scene of a reported crash between an aircraft and a helicopter at Waddesdon, Buckinghamshire.

It had flown nearly 14,000 hours as of May and had previously suffered substantial damage to its landing gear, propeller and engine following a crash at a Cornish airfield in 1993.

The crash occurred around half an hour after the latest closure was due to end.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said it was assisting in the investigation, revealing that the plane involved was a light Cessna.

The collision is understood to have happened near Waddesdon, in Buckinghamshire, shortly after 12noon today.

An airfield which offers training for rookie pilots has confirmed that two of its aircraft have crashed near a Buckinghamshire stately home. She said all visitors were safe.

Both aircraft had taken off from nearby Wycombe Air Park, a spokesman said.

"We heard a helicopter circling overhead and then heard sirens", she said.

Staff from the country estate helped direct emergency vehicles and a huge cordon has been put in place.

A white tent erected inside the ground was partially visible through a high hedge from the main road, which has been reopened.
