Coleman quits as Wales manager, poised for Sunderland job

Coleman-quits-Wales

Chris Coleman has been installed as the new favourite to take up the reins at Sunderland after the Wales boss odds were slashed on Thursday morning.

Former Fulham and Coventry City boss Coleman will team up with Wales internationals Jonny Williams, on loan from Crystal Palace, and right-back Adam Matthews at Sunderland - both of which have played under Coleman at global level.

Coleman's reputation sky-rocketed after leading Wales - previously without a major tournament appearance since 1958 - to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, but he was unable to follow that up with qualification for next year's World Cup in Russian Federation.

Coleman saw his odds drop, according to the Northern Echo, as punters seemingly got wind of him reportedly being touted as the next incumbent in the Black Cats' managerial hotseat.

He took in disappointing spells at Real Sociedad, Coventry and AEL before rebuilding his reputation on the worldwide scene with Wales.

"We wish Chris the very best of luck for the future as he returns to club management, a desire for which he has always been honest and open about".

Sunderland are reportedly moving for Barnsley's Paul Heckingbottom rather than Ally McCoist.

But following a board meeting on Friday, Coleman chose to reject the offer of a contract extension, and the Mail report that he will replace Simon Grayson at Sunderland by the end of the week.

Coleman took his first job when 33, managing Fulham after retiring early due to injury.

He took over Wales at a dark period in their history but led the nation to its greatest-ever success.

His side failed to make it to next summer's World Cup, however, after being pipped to a play-off position in Group D following a 1-0 defeat to Ireland in Cardiff last month. But he had considered backtracking on that promise before Sunderland persuaded him to head to the north-east.
