Tensions rise in Zimbabwe as military tanks near the capital

Breaking: Mugabe in trouble: 4 army tanks move towards capital

Witnesses in the city reported several lorries full of military personnel and at least six armoured vehicles on roads approaching the city in the late afternoon, though residents said there was no sign of troops in the centre of Harare, the airport, government broadcasters or the residence of president Robert Mugabe.

Mnangagwa's removal provides a boost for Grace Mugabe, the wife of the president, who is supported by the largely youthful G40 faction of ZANU-PF to succeed her husband.

Following General Constantine Chiwenga's decision to challenge Mugabe's mistreatment of former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zanu PF has fired back at the army stating that the military boss is guilty of mishandling $15billion in diamond revenues.

Zimbabwe's top military commander on Monday urged the ruling Zanu-PF party to put its house in order, saying the military would step in if the revolution that brought independence was under threat.

It said it stood by the "primacy of politics over the gun" and accused General Chiwenga of "treasonable conduct ... meant to incite insurrection".

"(Mugabe) has previously warned the military to stay away from ZANU-PF's succession race.

A number of people posted images of the military vehicles on social media.

The ruling party will next month hold an extra ordinary congress to reaffirm Mugabe's candidature in next year's presidential elections and also amend the party constitution to allow for a female vice president. Fears of some sort of revolt grew over the last few hours after several army tanks were spotted headed for the capital, and major arteries out of Harare were closed.

Mnangagwa, 75, was widely viewed as Mugabe's most loyal lieutenant, having worked alongside him for decades.

"We are surprised to see these army tanks along the Chinhoyi-Harare highway".

"When it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in", Chiwenga told a press conference on Monday.

Mnangagwa took over as vice president from Joice Mujuru who was axed in 2014 after Grace Mugabe launched a campaign accusing her of plotting to topple the president.

"The current purging which is clearly targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith", Chiwenga said.

Analysts said if Mugabe responded to Chiwenga's statement, he would be compelled to choose sides between war veterans and the young turks rallying behind his wife.
