GameStop Pauses Unlimited Used Games Program

The retailer confirmed that it had halted the initiative in a statement, citing "a few program limitations we have identified" as the cause. Additionally, a GameStop spokesperson told Kotaku that those who have already purchased their membership through the soft launch can receive a full refund, and pick out a used game to keep for their troubles. At the end of each 6-month subscription, you get to choose one used game to keep as your own.

Kotaku reports that GameStop has told its employees to pull down all promotional material related to the PowerPass subscription program.

Stores were instructed to take down signage and advertising for Power Pass, and store them in their backrooms. "We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exceptional service", a GameStop spokesperson said.

GameStop's game subscription service is here, aaaand it's gone.

In a likely attempt to stem the tide of game downloads, GameStop has devoted more and more floor space in each store to physical geek culture goods like Funko Pop figurines and T-shirts.

Customers looking forward to the rollout of GameStop's new game rental program, PowerPass, will have to press pause on those plans. The PowerPass program was just way too advanced for them to handle, giving retail employees serious issues.

The service, which soft-launched this week at some locations, is called PowerPass. As well, those existing PowerPass customers are also being given a free pre-owned game to make up for the spontaneous change of plans.

It's unclear why GameStop has chose to do this but some store employees suggest that limitations related to the company's old computers likely caused this.

PowerPass has the potential to be a very popular service - that is if the catalog of games available is relatively large and up-to-date.
