First Hijab-Wearing Barbie Based On Olympic Fencer

Glamour Celebrates 2017 Women Of The Year Live Summit

Muhammad made history back in 2016 for being the first member of the United States Olympic team to compete with a hijab and Mattel is returning the favor with the brand new limited-edition Barbie doll.

Muhammad, the first American athlete to wear a hijab while competing in the Olympics, had a major role in designing the doll. Do you like Barbie's new look? "Flawless hijab moment right here-this is incredible", she exclaimed.

According to Mattel, the "Sheros" program was created in honor of women who break boundaries.

The Olympic fencer announced on Monday at Glamour's Women of the Year summit that she will be the next doll in Barbie's "Shero" line which includes iconic women like Ava DuVernay, Gabby Douglas and Misty Copeland.

During the Olympics Ms Muhammad drew criticism after she described the U.S. as a risky place for Muslims, telling the Daily Beast she did "not feel safe" as a Muslim living in America.

But there's one thing Barbie hasn't done until now - worn a hijab, or Islamic headscarf or covering.

Tweeting about the news, Ibtihaj said it's a childhood dream come true.

"I'm proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab!" she wrote in her caption.

On their website, Mattel said they hoped the doll would serve as "an inspiration for countless little girls who never saw themselves represented in sports and culture". "I know that as an athlete I have larger legs - these strong legs that we use, especially fencers, to propel ourselves into lunges - and it was important for me to have my doll be as close to my likeness as possible". Last year, Mattel modeled a doll after Ashley Graham to "celebrate her pushing boundaries within the fashion industry and promoting the messages of body positivity".
