New global students enrolled in United States colleges decline

The University of San Diego has earned the No. 2 national ranking among the Top 40 doctorate-granting universities part of IIE's Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange

Almost 500 college and university officials reported the overall number of enrolled students was flattening, with an average decrease of 7 percent in the number of newly enrolled global students for 2017-18.

To learn about current trends - based on students who made the decision to apply and attend US colleges in 2015 and were already attending class by the fall of 2016 - the Institute conducted a separate online enrollment survey in October with 10 education associations. Furthermore, the record also marks the eleventh consecutive year of continued expansion for the total number of worldwide students in U.S. higher education, said the report.

The IIE's collection of enrollment data for worldwide students includes two categories of students who are not now enrolled at Ohio State in classes for credit. The Chinese total surpassed 350,000 in fall 2016, up 7 percent from the previous year. It was followed by Kent State University (3,625), Miami University (2,654), Case Western Reserve University (2,565), Wright State University (2,372), University of Toledo (2,200), Cleveland State University (1,973), University of Dayton (1,837), Ohio University (1,588) and the University of Akron (1,367).

While the number of global students has decreased by 7%, American students studying aboard have also increased by 4%, in comparison to past year. The year 2014-15 too had seen robust growth of 29.4%.

US colleges seek foreign students to bolster enrollment and their budgets, for those students generally pay full tuition and fees. Students from these two countries now represent nearly 50% of the total enrolment of worldwide students in the US.

Indiana University ranks 19th overall for worldwide student enrollment with 7,502 students.

The nonprofit's head of research says it's a "wake-up call" for colleges, but is nowhere near the doomsday scenarios some had predicted.

"The scaling back of large Saudi and Brazil government scholarship programs were a significant factor, as the number of students from those two countries showed the biggest decreases at all levels, including non-degree study", officials said in a press release. And 24 percent reported no change, the preliminary Open Doors report data read.

The roughly 3 percent decline in new foreign students in California and nationally was the first drop the institute has recorded in the 12 years it has collected such data, and the decline appears to be deepening.

An F1 visa is a non-immigrant visa for those looking to study in the US.

Institutions are concerned about recruitment for Fall 2018, particularly from the Middle East and North Africa and Asia.

"May and summer programming provides students with an opportune moment in their college career to study overseas and gain worldwide experience in their field of study or complete General Education requirements", said Gifty Ako-Adounvo, assistant vice provost for global strategies and worldwide affairs.

However, only 20 percent of institutions indicate that some of their foreign students have expressed the desire to leave or have left the U.S.as a result of the current climate.

"International student exchange is an essential contributor to America's economic competitiveness and national security".
