Republicans must turn their backs on Roy Moore

Bill Clark TNS

A group close to McConnell that spent millions of dollars to oppose Moore in the primary called on Gov. Kay Ivey, R, and the state party to investigate the allegations. Whether or not that (a) takes votes away from Moore, and (b) does so in enough quantity to get unusual ahead of Doug Jones from the write-in spot is a completely different matter.

His party suddenly and bitingly divided, Alabama Republican Roy Moore ignored increasing pressure to abandon his Senate bid on Friday as fears grew among GOP leaders that a once-safe Senate seat was in jeopardy just a month before a special election.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, which fundraises for Senate candidates, is no longer listed as one of the beneficiaries of a joint fundraising committee benefitting Moore, per paperwork filed Friday with the Federal Election Commission.

While the bombshell child molestation allegations made against Judge Roy Moore have commanded headlines since they broke Thursday, it's not yet clear what affect they might have on his candidacy for the Alabama Senate seat.

John Skipper, former chair of the Mobile County Republican Party in Alabama, echoed Moore's sentiment.

Some prominent Republicans are calling on Moore to leave the race, but he does have his defenders, in addition to Zeigler. But most have said he should do so only if the accusations are proven true.

Now the Washington Post has published the allegations of women claiming Moore sought romantic and even physical relationships with them when he was in his 30's and they were younger than 18.

Over the ensuing three weeks, two Post reporters contacted and interviewed the four women.

Moore, a former Alabama Supreme Court chief judge twice removed from office, has denied the charges. "They're out to destroy him", Bannon continued, and then asked rhetorically: "Do you know why?"

Zeigler, asked to respond to Lipinsky's comments today, stressed that he believes the story about Moore is not true and called the story a "hit piece". "It's too easy for someone to make these accusations".

But distance might matter in Alabama, too.

Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore of Alabama is facing lurid allegations of sexual misconduct with minors decades ago - and an immediate backlash from party leaders demanding he get out of the race if the accusations prove true.

Stewart came to the floor and told McConnell and unusual that a statement was being sent to reporters. Middle grounds don't usually provide profiles in courage, but it's better than nothing ...

The most serious of these allegations was an on-the-record statement from a woman named Leigh Corfman that Moore, then 32, kissed and inappropriately touched her when she was 14 years old. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul. "Moore is unfit for office and should step aside", he wrote.

Moore himself has issued a fundraising appeal asking for emergency donations in a "spiritual battle". If Lee has changed his mind about Moore, he's been awfully quiet about it. The accounts by multiple women prompted Republican lawmakers to say he should end his candidacy for the December 12 special election if the allegations are true. The standard for voters isn't guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, but whether the evidence suggests that the candidate would be worthy of public trust.

If the Bible is not clear on the subject, the law is: Alabama's legal age of consent then and now is 16 and adults can not touch children sexually or entice them into a home for that objective.
