NCAA Reports Rise in Black Athletes' Graduation Rate

Twelve of Clemson's 14 sports eclipsed the national average for NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision schools.

"Our student-athletes continually strive to set the standard on the playing fields, in the classroom and in Bancroft Hall", Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk said in a statement.

Penn State student-athletes achieved a record-tying academic performance as the student-athletes continue to graduate at rates higher than most schools around the country.

That's the highest ever for TTU based on information released by the NCAA.

GW's baseball, women's basketball, women's cross country and track, gymnastics, men's rowing, women's soccer, men's and women's squash, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and women's water polo programs all achieved a flawless 100 Graduation Success Rate over a four year period.

Marshall student-athletes who enrolled between 2007 and 2010 boasted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 85 percent, one point higher than the Herd's numbers last October, according to figures released Wednesday by the NCAA.

All 13 of Gonzaga's countable programs finished above the national average in their respective sports. The rate is limited because it ignores the large number of transfer students in higher education, but it is still the only rate that allows a direct comparison between student-athletes and the general student body.

The GSR provides a more inclusive calculation of student-athlete academic success. Student-athletes who leave an institution while in good academic standing before exhausting athletics eligibility are removed from the cohort of their initial institution (essentially passed to another squad's GSR cohort if they transfer and removed altogether in the case of early departures for professional careers).

Eleven teams (baseball, men's basketball, football, golf, men's skiing, men's tennis, women's basketball, cross country/track, gymnastics, women's tennis and volleyball) exceeded the overall Division I GSR for their sport.

The Marsha Sharp Center for Student Athletes has spaces for private study, computer labs, supplemental-instruction classrooms and a private conferencing area for tutoring and mentoring appointments for the student athletes at Tech, according to the release. "For us to once again be at the top of the USM institutions shows the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff".
