Google's reportedly working on its own Apple AirDrop competitor

Google Files Go

The Files Go app will also list every app on your Android device that you are not using. Similar to popular file sharing apps such as Shareit and Xender, Google's app creates your profile to help you send large-sized files with your nearby contacts at a fast pace. You can't, for example, access the device's root folder or even copy and paste files. The app has since been pulled, but can be sideloaded as an APK file. The app was briefly listed as an unreleased app on Google Play, with users required to enter an early access programme for testing. One screenshot hints that file transfers work via Bluetooth, though that's not confirmed.

Here, the Storage tab, left, shows a device with 8GB of internal storage and displays how much capacity has been used.

Google today chose to launch its new Files Go Android app into public beta to reach a wider group of testers. Now, it seems that Google has been working on an in-house file manager app for a while. We are not sure of all of the features yet, but we got a glimpse of what is in store thanks to the test release on Google Play.

Files Go may be headed to emerging markets, where internet connectivity is still not up to par with developed markets.

Users can browse through all of your phone's content by downloads, received files, images, videos, audio, and documents. The UI shows a radar-like interface to initiate transfers between two devices - with the caveat that both devices needs Files Go to be installed.

So the good news is that this app is available right now through the APK. You can install the app through the available file on any of your devices running Android 5.0 and above. We think that Google likely will be testing this app out for a bit longer before the official release happens. Google also set up a new app review procedure to pinpoint violators as early as possible.
