Apple will create a augmented reality headset

Apple is building augmented reality glasses that overlay the digital world on top of the real world Report

According to Bloomberg's reliable Apple leak machine, the team in Cupertino is hard at work on an AR headset with a custom "system-on-a-package" chip, a new OS that's specifically designed for AR, and a device that's similar to Samsung's Gear VR.

However, Cook also recently told The Independent that the technology needed to build such a product the right way simply "doesn't exist", and that Apple is more concerned with being the best on the market than the first. But unlike these headsets, which remain tethered to a smartphone or a computer, Apple's rumored AR headset would run independently, thanks to a new chip and operating system, according to Bloomberg, which broke the news Wednesday.

There is no comfirmation how Apple's AR device will be controlled, but the Bloomberg report suggested that the firm is investigating touch panels, voice-activation (via Siri) and head gestures. At WWDC, Apple announced a $599 External Graphics Development Kit for macOS developers that includes $100 credit toward the purchase of an HTC Vive. Googles headset unlike Apples will focus on education and medical uses.

Apple has an "aggressive" timeline for the device, hoping to officially unveil it in 2019 and shipping it in 2020. Further, the report noted that one of the teams is working on a pair of glasses that are equipped with a 3D camera, but no screen.

It's no secret that Apple is high on augmented reality. In a recent earnings report, CEO Tim Cook said that the AR technology will "change the way we use technology forever". He said he's especially concerned with the "display technology" that would be required to place virtual elements over the real world.

The applications in AR are endless because the user can use it anywhere.

"Microsoft's Hololens and its evolving mixed-reality reference platform also signal competition in the field".

Reality check: In just a few short months, Apple has gone from the AR sidelines to the front of the pack, with a spate of apps that take full advantage of the Apple's new engine. Rockwell previously ran engineering at Dolby Labs. And even though the headset is still more than two years from release, Bloomberg's sources said Apple's launch schedule is ambitious. AR on smartphones is seen as a first step toward consumer adoption of the technology.

If Apple wants to lead the segment, it will have to learn from the mistakes that Google made with the Google Glass.
