Sydney school to reopen after deadly crash as the community mourns

The incident reportedly occurred at Banksia Road Public School in Sydney, Australia at 9.45am local time (10.45pm United Kingdom time the previous day) when the woman's Toyota Kluger hit the demountable classroom, police said.

Several children were injured, some seriously.

The driver, who did not require medical treatment, was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests. Seventeen children and a female teacher were assessed on the grounds by paramedics.

A spokesman for the NSW Department of Education said support services would be available at the school when students returned today.

Both the children were rushed to Westmead Children's Hospital in a critical condition, where they were pronounced dead.

Eyewitnesses reportedly told police that the woman appeared to have lost control while driving out of the school.

It was written by a year four student at the school.

"Apparently I think she (the driver) drove in there and instead of maybe pressing the brake, she might have hit the accelerator but for me there should be no cars in the school".

Police and paramedics at the scene in Greenacre. One distressed mother said she hadn't heard from her child and feared the worst.

While watching vision of the scene, Sydney radio presenter Ray Hadley was astonished.

A crime scene has been set up and police from the Bankstown Local Area Command are at the scene.

Police are investigating how the crash happened, but NSW Police Commander Stuart Smith said: 'We do not believe this was an intentional act'. "It is a crash investigation", Mr Smith said.

'It is very, very hard because we are parents ourselves, we are human beings. Police are asking parents who are collecting their children to attend the Boronia Rd school entrance. A further 17 children and a teacher were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
