Amazon Fire TV Stick Basic Edition Launches in Canada for $49.99

Amazon launches $50 Fire TV Stick Basic Edition in more than 100 markets

The Fire TV Stick Basic Edition comes with quad-core processor, 1GB of memory and 8GB of storage, so despite the name, it appears to be the same as the $40 Fire TV Stick now sold in the US.

Amazon's Fire TV Stick Basic Edition, a streaming media player, is now available in over 100 countries - including South Africa. The remote it comes with lacks the microphone and the Alexa button. The original Fire Stick TV was launched in 2014 as a US-only product, while the second-generation model also released in a handful of European countries.

Some big news for Canadians, as Amazon.ca has launched their new Fire TV Stick Basic Edition in Canada and beyond, priced at $49.99 CAD (it's priced at $49.99 in the US).

Prime Video, which costs US$5.99 (NZ$8.70) a month, launched in New Zealand previous year and features shows such as Grand Tour, the Man in the High Castle and American Gods. It must be noted that it costs $10 more than the standard full-featured Fire TV Stick.

Users will be able to set their language with a choice of Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Italian, German, or English included. "This makes streaming content from apps like Prime Video fast and easy and we can't wait to hear what customers think". We won't stop you if you live in the United States and want to pick up the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition, however, so you can find the means to do so at the link below.

From what I could gather, the Basic Edition doesn't exist to replace 2016's Fire TV Stick, but as an option for the rest of the world.

When it comes to specs, the Amazon Fire TV Stick is equipped with HDMI connectivity, 1GB RAM, a quad-core processor, and 8GB onboard storage. Supports High Efficiency Video Codec for 1080p HD streaming and includes Dolby Audio (NYSE:DLB). Those versions are more powerful and, curiously, also less expensive.

So what gives? One possible explanation is that Amazon does intend to sell the Fire TV Basic in Australia eventually, but doesn't want to do so until it can sell through the actual.com.au site, whenever that happens.
