AMD and Intel join forces for exciting new processors

Intel, AMD Team up for the First Time Since the 80s to Take on Nvidia

The traditional CPU and GPU design in a laptop (left) versus Intel and AMD's new chip design (right). Intel has formally revealed it has been working on a new series of processors that combine its high-performance x86 cores with AMD Radeon Graphics into the same processor package using Intel's own EMIB multi-die technology.

The collaboration is being interpreted as a way for Intel and AMD to counteract the increasing success of Nvidia's GPUs.

"Together we are offering gamers and content creators the opportunity to have a thinner-and-lighter PC capable of delivering discrete performance-tier graphics experiences in AAA games and content creation applications", AMD president Scott Herkelman adds.

There's no word on an exact release date, but Intel says it expects manufacturers to begin shipping systems based on the new chip at some point in the first quarter of 2018.

"It's a prime example of hardware and software innovations intersecting to create something incredible that fills a unique market gap", said Christopher Walker, vice president of the Client Computing Group and general manager of the Mobile Client Platform at Intel, in a blog post.

Powerful laptops like this Alienware model are traditionally thick and heavy, but Intel and AMD's new chip could change that. "Balancing power between our high-performing processor and the graphics subsystem is critical to achieve great performance across both processors as systems get thinner".

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) slips 1% premarket after The Wall Street Journal reports Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) plan to partner for PC chip production. AMD is very specific in pointing out that this new chip will be aimed at more serious gamers, whereas the Ryzen chips can run general games, but aren't designed for the specific objective of serious gaming.

"At the heart of this new design is EMIB, an intelligent bridge that allows heterogeneous silicon to quickly pass information in extremely close proximity". And while it may not directly compete from a graphics standpoint, Intel is still facing potentially stiff competition from NVIDIA in the machine learning space. This allows for real-time monitoring of temperature, power, and performance - yet again, not unlike AMD's Infinity Fabric. But there was one piece missing: Discrete graphics.

AMD shares were up 6.3%, near 11.80, in morning trading on the stock market today.

Since AMD's Lisa Su really likes the semi-custom business, the fact that Intel calls this solution a semi-custom GPU, speaks for itself. This $257 United States dollars proc is again a six-core processor that you will need to seat on a Z37.
