Flanagan, Kamworor win New York City Marathon

Shalane Flanagan becomes first American woman to win New York City Marathon in 40 years

Shalane Flanagan has become the first American woman to win the popular annual marathon in the past 40 years.

She finished the race in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 53 seconds. The two runners embraced at the finish line after it was all over. and then no doubt fled soon after for a dark, quiet bedroom and some well-earned rest.

Not since Miki Gorman in 1977 had a USA woman won on the "Big Apple" streets.

Kamworor finished in second place in 2015, his first year to run the full NYC Marathon.

Flanagan, the 2010 NY marathon runner-up, was sixth in last year's Rio Olympic marathon.

"New York is very incredible".

The NYC Marathon kicked off Sunday morning under the watchful eye of the city's police department days after a truck drove into people on a bike path, killing eight people in Manhattan.

In the men's race, Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor held off countryman Wilson Kipsang to clock 2:10.53 and win by three seconds. The 35-year-old Kenyan has won here three straight years, including by 3 minutes, 34 seconds last year - the biggest margin in the women's race since 1980.

Kipsang, the 2014 NY champion, was three seconds back with Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa third in 2:11:32.

Among celebrities in the race, Kevin Hart had the best request. Kamworor separated from the pack late and seemed like he would cruise to his first major marathon victory, but Kipsang appeared on his heels in the final stretch. "I'm looking forward to coming back next year".

Mary Keitany of Kenya, the three-time defending champion, finished in 2:27:54, and Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia finished in 2:28:08.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the event being staged as planned was "a terrorist's worst nightmare" for bringing together people from a variety of cultures with resiliency despite the deadly attack.
