Democrats Demand Sessions Testify Before Senate Judiciary Committee-Again

Carter Page a former foreign policy adviser to Donald Trump speaks with reporters on Nov. 2 2017

Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election and whether anyone on the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian officials during the race is the subject of a law enforcement investigation headed by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Earlier this week, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former Trump campaign official Rick Gates surrendered to special counsel Robert Mueller, and another former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos, pleaded guilty to making a false statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser to Donald Trump's campaign, said Friday that his mention of an upcoming trip to Russian Federation to Jeff Sessions was "a brief comment as we were walking toward the elevator".

"He now needs to come back before the Committee, in person, under oath, to explain why he can not seem to provide truthful, complete answers to these important and relevant questions", Leahy said in a statement.

Last month, Sessions testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that neither he nor anyone else was in contact with Russian operatives during the election cycle. Page's Thursday testimony (disclosed to CNN by Texas Republican Rep. Mike Conaway) indicates that Sessions knew about Page's trips to Russian Federation.

"He now needs to come back before the Committee, in person, under oath, to explain why he can not seem to provide truthful, complete answers to these important and relevant questions", Leahy, a former chairman of the Judiciary Committee, told The New York Times.

During his confirmation hearing in January, Sessions told Sen. "I am deeply troubled that this newest revelation strongly suggests that the Senate ― and the American public ― can not trust your word".

According to court documents released Monday, Papadopoulos said he was in a meeting with Trump and other advisers, including then-Sen.

Page also told Tapper that he was not in the March 2016 meeting where Papadopoulos initially suggested the Russian Federation meeting. Jeff Sessions, when he said "he had connections that could help arrange a meeting between then-candidate Trump and President [Vladimir] Putin". "He may have been at future Trump events that Sessions attended - including a dinner at the Capitol Hill Club with some members of the foreign policy committee over the summer - but Sessions doesn't recall any further interactions with him, including any phone calls or emails".

"He lied under oath at least twice, and most recently Carter Page and George Papadopoulos, based on their testimony and their statements, they show that Jeff Sessions contradicted himself when he said he was not aware of any campaign official talking to the Russians", Lieu said.

A source at the Department of Justice confirmed to HuffPost that Sessions spoke out against the idea.
