Bush Sr and Jr openly condemn Donald Trump

George HW Bush on Trump: He's a 'blowhard'

Former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush apparently had some harsh words for Donald Trump, according to a new book.

The younger Bush had earlier described Donald Trump's inauguration speech in March as "some weird s**t".

"I don't like him", Bush Sr. told Updegrove six months before the 2016 presidential election.

"... If you look at his values and those shared by his father and Ronald Reagan, they are very much in contrast to the values of the Republican Party today, in particular the platform that Donald Trump ran on, which is essentially protectionism and a certain xenophobia", Updegrove told the Times.

Updegrove said the title of the book came from a conversation he had with the junior Bush in which he said, "I'm anxious that I will be the last Republican president". Last year, neither voted for him - and that meant going against a party they both once led.

Upon learning this, Updegrove wrote, George W. Bush thought to himself: "Wow, this guy really doesn't understand the job of president".

It is rare in the modern political era to see former presidents to openly criticize their successors.

One of the key differences, according to the former presidents?

That statement inspired the title of an upcoming book about George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.

Trump had recently had nice things to say about another former president, Jimmy Carter, whom he once called worst president in U.S. history.

So the historian wasn't surprised to see Trump's old campaign feuds embroil his White House in 2017, though he had to think back more than half a century to cite a comparable example. Bush Sr actually voted for Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, while the younger Bush left the space blank on the ballot.
