Two-team SEC playoff alive with Bama, Georgia and Auburn

Marcus Baugh

The final rankings will be released December 3 at noon.

While Nick Saban might not have been watching, the rest of college football was glued to their TVs on Tuesday evening as the initial College Football Playoff rankings selected SEC East-leading Georgia at No. 1. Georgia and Alabama are undefeated while Notre Dame and Clemson each have one loss. Notre Dame with one loss but three convincing wins over ranked opponents is now seven spots higher than next weekend's opponent Miami who enters this weekend unbeaten for their showdown with Virginia Tech.

"As you know, we dont look at the other polls", CFP selection committee chairman Kirby Hocutt told ESPNs Rece Davis. I'm focusing on the next four games and could care less about the poll. Hocutt also praised the overall resumes for Notre Dame and Clemson, which each have multiple wins over teams in the rankings.

ESPN's Greg McElroy took time to address the initial Playoff Rankings, and he believes the committee's work is "outstanding stuff".

"At the end of the day, it was the two wins against CFP Top 25 teams for Georgia, specifically the win over No. 3 Notre Dame, that gave Georgia the very slight edge over Alabama this week". The Wolverines are No. 38 in this week's Sagarin Ratings, but several ranked teams had higher strength-of-schedule ratings, including No. 24 Michigan State (16th), No. 20 North Carolina State (26th), No. 17 USC (7th) and No. 15 Iowa State (22nd).

The Sooners are ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25 while the Cowboys are No. 11.

An impressive win over a struggling Florida Gators team has the Bulldogs coming in at number two on our list.

This is the fourth season of the playoff, and until now Georgia had been a non-factor in the process. The schedule does not get any easier for Notre Dame as they cap off their season with road matchups against both Miami and Stanford.

It will be interesting to see if Clemson can pick up a much-needed victory this Saturday at NC State to help their case as we wind down the season. That's probably the cut off of teams that could actually make the College Football Playoff, given no two-loss team has made it before.

Reminder, Notre Dame plays Wake Forest and Stanford again this November on top of unbeaten however unimpressive Miami and a Navy team that beat the Irish a year ago. It's the only major poll that has the Sooners ranked higher than the Buckeyes despite the fact OU beat Ohio State in Columbus earlier this season.

"We all just watched it as a team just now", Oklahoma linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo said. The strongest team Wisconsin has defeated is Northwestern (5-3) and Miami has only two victories against teams with winning records, Hocutt noted.
