Rafael Nadal pulls out of Paris Masters with a knee injury

Injured Nadal survives scare to reach Paris QFs as Goffin joins Fedal & co. in London

World number one Rafael Nadal pulled out of the Paris Masters on Friday before his quarter-final with a knee injury.

'Only thing I'm going to say, I'm going to do my treatment, do my best to be playing in London, but I can not talk about that now because it's a day that is tough enough for me to pull out from here'.

Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal secured a year-end top position in the ATP Rankings following his victory over South Korean talent Chung Hyeon in the second round of the Paris Masters on Wednesday, while promising German star Alexander Zverev was turned down by Robin Haase in full sets.

The injury has thrown his participation at the World Tour Finals at London's O2 Arena, scheduled to run from November 12 to 19, into doubt.

Although in 2017 Wimbledon, he was out after a defeat by Luxembourg ace Gilles Müller in the round of 16, Nadal clinched his fourth US Open trophy after the win over South Africa's Kevin Anderson. "I pushed the body", Nadal added.

"I don't think he's regretting it one little bit".

But knee problems, which have dogged his career, resurfaced in Shanghai last month, causing him to miss last week's tournament in Basel.

Paris semifinalist Isner would qualify for London if he went on to win what is the last Masters event of the year.

"For me it's not about London". I am sad enough to pull out from here.

Conversation soon went onto the demands of the year-long ATP schedule, the increasing number of cases of high-profile players taking an extended break from the tour and whether changes need to be made to the scheduling of tournaments in the ATP calendar. "I need to play well, but as I say, I hope to be ready to make that happen", remarked Nadal.
