The Portuguese was asked after Saturday's 1-0 home win over Tottenham if Pogba, who has been undergoing rehabilitation in the United States, had any chance of returning before the forthcoming global break. The centre-forward created Anthony Martial's 81st-minute victor and Mourinho also pointed to how the Belgian was hard for Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen to deal with.

'The fans are the fans and I told them they paid tickets and are free to express themselves the way they want.

"They can boo a player that doesn't deserve to be booed, they can boo a player that is working like an animal and because the game is not going in his direction".

"So for me untouchable in my team and also untouchable in the respect and support he deserves from the fans".

Earlier today SunSport reported how his boss Jose Mourinho as once again sprung to the defence of "untouchable" top scorer Romelu Lukaku.

"We played well. To play well against a very good team feels even better".

- Playing football for a striker isn't just about scoring goals - Mourinho.

"They pay (for) their tickets, they can do what they want".

The manager believes the club have made progress since winning the Europa League last season, when they also finished in the relatively low position of sixth in the Premier League.

Manchester United are looking to win their first Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson led the Red Devils to their 20th top-flight crown.

"I don't think he was quiet at all", Mourinho said. "The point is scoring or not scoring because in the end that is what people analyse sometimes". If United win they are guaranteed qualification for the knockout stage. Nobody here thinks about Chelsea.

French global Pogba picked up a hamstring injury during the Red Devils' Champions League victory over Basel last month, with initial reports suggesting that the 24-year-old would be ruled out for somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks.
