Nationals name Dave Martinez as manager

Dave Martinez

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Nationals have chosen Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez to be their new manager. An official announcement is not expected to come until after the World Series, which is typical for such things.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters Thursday it's time for Martinez to get his own team.

Martinez, Joe Maddon's bench coach since 2008, interviewed recently in Washington.

The 53-year-old Martinez was considered the front-runner to replace Dusty Baker, who was sacked last week after two seasons.

The agreement with Martinez was first reported Sunday by The Washington Post.

No manager has been guaranteed more than two years under current Nationals ownership (since 2006). The last rookie manager to lead a team to a World Series title was Bob Brenly with the Diamondbacks in 2001.

David Ross didn't exactly ride off into the sunset once Cubs teammates Anthony Rizzo and Jason Heyward picked him up onto their shoulders and carried him off the field after last year's World Series Game 7 in Cleveland.

Baker was let go a little more than a week ago. The Nationals selected Bud Black to replace him but negotiations crumbled and Baker was given the job.

In the Nationals, Martinez will inherit a team with a stellar bullpen, MVP-caliber player Bryce Harper and a strong lineup, but it remains an organization unable to break through the NLDS.

Martinez has been a candidate for several managerial openings in recent years.

But the Nationals did not struggle to negotiate with their manager this time, committing three years (and perhaps a fourth) to Martinez in a marked departure from their normal handling of managers.
