Jim McElwain and Florida are parting ways

That's according to ESPN, which reported Sunday that school administrators were looking into the possibility of firing McElwain with cause.

Controversy surrounded the coach even before the game, though.

The move comes a day after Florida fell to SEC rival Georgia 42-7.

The Florida Gators are scheduled to meet with Jim McElwain on Sunday concerning a buyout agreement. In addition to his years as head coach and standout coordinator at Miami, he also spent time with the Miami Dolphins as a defensive assistant and was an assistant at UM before that.

Last week, McElwain said he and other staff members, as well as their families, had received death threats, but declined to provide further details after reporters asked questions.

It remains to be seen if that's enough to fire McElwain with cause, or compel him to settle with the school on a lesser buyout amount, but it appears that his tenure with the Gators has come to an abrupt end.

Florida went 9-4 overall and 6-3 in SEC play in 2016 and once again took the Eastern Division title.

He became Florida's defensive coordinator following the departure of former defensive coordinator Geoff Collins, who left Gainesville to become the head coach at Temple before Florida's Outback Bowl appearance in early 2017.

McElwain has acknowledged that he was brought to Gainesville in December 2014 to "fix the offense" and that he has not been successful in getting consistent performances out of that oft-sputtering unit.

Hayes said he was told by a source that Florida legend - both as a player and coach - Steve Spurrier tried reaching out to McElwain on two separate occasions this season to offer help.

McElwain compiled a record of 22-12 in his two and a half years on the job at Florida.
