Astros' Yuli Gurriel suspended five games in 2018, won't miss World Series

Major League Baseball Should Suspend Yuli Gurriel Force Others to Defend the Indefensible

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred announced on Saturday that he was suspending Gurriel without pay for five games at the start of next season, and said he chose to delay the suspension because he didn't think it would be fair to penalize Gurriel's teammates by suspending the first baseman - who is hitting.340 this postseason - from any World Series games. Astros' first baseman Yulieski Gurriel started the scoring with a solo shot in the second inning off a starter Yu Darvish.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale first reported Gurriel's suspension.

On that note, Manfred said he felt it was unfair to punish Gurriel's 24 active teammates for his individual actions during the World Series.

Did Yuli Gurriel say chinito while he made that gesture? An MLB spokesperson said in a statement, "We are aware of the situation and the Commissioner intends to speak with the player tomorrow".

Gurriel was born in Cuba and played there and in Japan in 2014 before coming to Major League Baseball past year.

Manfred said it was also in part because Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish, the Japanese hurler who was the target of the insult, wants to move forward as quickly as possible from the incident.

Gurriel, a Cuban player, later apologized for his actions and comments. Gurriel is 3-for-9 with a home run and an RBi in the last two games and will face lefty Alex Wood on Saturday.

"He has handled this entire hard situation in an exemplary way", Manfred said of Darvish. Manfred also said it was important for Gurriel to take a hit in the salary department, and that only happens during the regular season. He played one season in Japan in 2014.

"We support [MLB's] decision of a five-game suspension for the 2018 season".

Gurriel has since apologized for the gesture as well as for using the word "Chinito", a Spanish term that can be used as a slur against Asians, The New York Times reports. He had no intention of offending anyone, but now recognizes the perceived offensiveness of his actions. "I know they don't like it".

Following the Astros' 5-3 win, Gurriel spoke in front of his locker with the aid of an interpreter, saying he didn't mean to offend anybody. (I didn't see it, and don't care to.) This touched of a storm from the Indignation-Industrial Complex, and one of its subsidiaries, Major League Baseball.
